About this app

This guide to Carcar City is part of the nationwide Digital Tourism program of telecommunications leader Smart Communications, Inc. and Cebu-based new media startup InnoPub Media.

Digital Tourism harnesses mobile technology to deliver tourism, cultural and historical information.

The program has 2 major components: 1) the production of ebooks and apps like this one to serve as guides to tourists and 2) the installation of interactive tourism markers that contain QR or quick response codes and NFC or near-field communication stickers to trigger the download of tourism, cultural and historical information.

To download information via QR Code scanning from our tourism markers, you need to have a QR Code scanning app, which you can download for free from your phone’s app store, and you need to be connected to the Internet. To download via NFC tapping, you need connect to the Internet, turn on NFC in your settings and then place your phone near the NFC logo. Newer Android phones have NFC capability. IPhones and iPads do not have NFC, you need to use QR scanning instead.

Digital Tourism was piloted by Smart and InnoPub in Cebu in 2012 but is now being implemented nationally. The program was recently recognized with an Anvil Award of Merit.
